There are many types of unique fishing methods that become popular and make it into the mainstream sport. One such category is spoon fishing. As surprising as it may be, different types of spoons attract different species of fish.

The shape and size of the spoon plays a role in what you can catch, as does the technique. There are four types of techniques you can use: jigging, topwater, trolling, or casting.

If you want to fish for predators, you want jigging spoons. This technique allows the spoon to free fall down into the water’s depths. Allow the spoon to sink to the bottom and then pull up the slack. You want the rod tip about one foot from the surface. To catch a fish’s attention, jerk the spoon up and down. Don’t be surprised if fish start biting before the spoon hits the bottom.

Topwater spoons, also known as weedless spoons, can attract musky, pike, and bass. These species hide in holes and under bushes and logs. To attract fish, cast the spoon over the hiding spot and slowly reel in the line. You want to keep the spoon on the surface of the water.

In trolling, you use a motor boat to propel through the water at a slow, controlled rate. You should use a light and thin spoon. With this type of spoon fishing, you may want to vary your technique depending on the fish you plan to catch. For example, if you want to lure salmon, walley, or trout, consider using a depth-control rig. Other methods include diving with crankbait and trolling on a long line for bottom dwellers.

Casting is as simple as tossing the spoon into the water and reeling it back in. You can play around with different methods to attract more bites.

The next time you find a random spoon lying around, set it aside as bait.
