Commonly Asked Questions
Is there an age requirement to rent from you?
We try to work with customers who are actually 25 years and above due to our insurance policy restrictions. But, based on your needs, whenever possible, we always strive to be flexible.
In case you are younger than twenty-five, try checking with your insurance company to find out whether you would be insured for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, and then call us.
Are your roof top tents family friendly?
Of course! Please note that with our rooftop camping vehicles you’ll have to climb a small ladder. If this sounds like an issue, we provide an extra tent with each package which you may put up on the ground. This can be much more comfortable for both you as well as your young ones.
How many people can your camper trucks accommodate?
The camper vehicles fit 3 people maximum, although in case there are more in your group, we do offer an additional camping tent, as well. With this, we are able to allow for up to 5 people. Each of our vehicles has 5 seatbelts.
What about surfboards?
Yes, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers surfboards & boogie boards and also fins upon request for a fee. Simply let us know in advance if you want to rent one, so that we can add it to your booking and have it ready for you at departure.
Do we get a travel guide or a map with the best hiking trails & beaches to explore on Kauai?
Yes, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best locations to visit & go camping on Kauai.
Kauai Camping Guide & Camping Permits FAQ
Am I able to head to any beach for camping?
You may drive up to any beach, nevertheless, you can only set up your camp in designated camping grounds. Here on Kauai, this is the usual practice. We will give you a list of the top places to explore and to camp in. Please note that driving a vehicle on the beaches is not permitted on Kauai.
Are we allowed to camp in the wild or are we only able to visit official camping grounds? If so, how much will it cost?
No, wild camping isn’t allowed on the island of Kauai. You can only camp in official areas with secured camping permits. The fee is roughly $3 per night in the majority of Kauai county parks, though private camping grounds may be a bit more. One advantage of these campgrounds is that you will have full access to facilities, including restrooms, showers and picnic tables. Please remember that if you choose to camp on the county campgrounds, you are only permitted to use the ground tent.

Do we need to get Kauai camping permits before we arrive in Kauai?
It is a good idea to obtain your Kauai camping permits before your arrival. For most private campgrounds, which we always recommend first, you can get your licenses online and also on-the-spot in the respective office.
If you opt to stay at a county campsite and set up a ground tent, you can request permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” webpage.
In advance, the fees are $3 per night for nonresidents of Hawaii. Accepted payment methods with this particular application are cashier’s checks and money orders. However, it’s not absolutely necessary to reserve your camping permits prior to your arrival. You may also obtain them at the various permit offices in Kauai, which is usually easier.
What is the processing time for obtaining camping permits?
No matter whether you choose to stay at a state or private camping ground, both online and in person reservations are possible. Please note that if you decide to stay at a county camping ground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it might take quite some time to receive your permits. Permits can be obtained at the license offices on Kauai once you have arrived; in-person permits are given on the spot.
